Why Some Political Parties Risk Missing Out On Next Year’s General elections

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Monday said that 10 political parties failed to meet the compliance rules after resubmission of their nomination rules.

Chebukati however declined to mention the names of the parties in question but said that they will be given the way forward.

“The Commission will contact the 10 Political Parties that did not comply with the nomination rules to advise on the way forward,” he said.

Speaking during a consultative forum with the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC), Chebukati said that only 72 parties met the required threshold.

“A total of 82 Political Parties resubmitted revised nomination rules and IEBC Kenya has completed a second review of their nomination rules. Only 72 were found to be compliant and will be issued with Compliance Certificates as guided by provisions of Section 27 of the Elections Act,” Chebukati said.

According to the IEBC boss, the 10 parties failed in internal dispute resolutions mechanisms and code of conduct while others failed to comply in both.

Only political parties with the compliance certificate, that will be issued as from this week, will be able to conduct party nominations between January and May 26 next year.

Aside from that Chebukati said that the commission is planning for the second and last  mass voter registration ahead of the 2022 general elections.

A total of 1.5 million Kenyans registered in the mass registration exercise that was concluded on November 5.

Voter registration is also being realized progressively on Kenyans living outside the country as well as prisoners.

Kenyans living in the UK, Canada, the United States, South Sudan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Germany will participate in the 2022 elections.

“The commission is currently undertaking mapping in the Diaspora and will soon announce the dates for voter registration in the diaspora,” he said.
