Longest Serving Members Of Parliament

In every election in Kenya, about 60 percent of Members of parliament are voted but there is a group of MPS that have retained their seats for the longest time either uninterrupted or interrupted.

In the Senate, 17 of the 47 elected senators retained their seats meaning 63.83 percent of them did not retain their seats. Five of the 30 Senators who were not reelected won the governorship seat.

Below are some of the legislatures who have served the county in Parliament for the longest time.

Amos Wako – 25 years

Amos Wako is not only the longest-serving Attorney General in the country but also one of the longest-serving MP.

The Busia Senator served as an ex-officio Member of Parliament between 1991 and 2011.

Wako shortly left the August House after the promulgation of 2010 before returning as a Senator in 2013. He is currently serving as a second-term Senator of Busia.

George Khaniri – 25 years

Ideally speaking, Senator George Khaniri is the longest-serving Member of Parliament of his generation. The lawmaker says he was introduced to politics by late former President Daniel Moi after the death of his father.

Khaniri was first elected in parliament at the age of 21 in 1996 under the Kanu ticket. Since winning in the 1996 by-election Khaniri has never lost an election.

He served as Hamisa MP for elections until he switched to become Vihiga senator under the Orange Democratic Movement ticket.

James Orengo – 23 years

After Khaniri, Siaya Senator is the second-longest serving lawmaker in Kenya. The seasoned politician was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1980. He was presenting Ugenya Constituency at the time.

Since his election as a young parliamentarian, Orengo retained his seat until 1997 when he vied for the presidency but lose. Since the loss, Orengo went into political cold until 2007 when he was re-elected as Ugenya MP. He, however, served the seat for a term then moved to become Siaya County’s Senator in 2013 where he is still serving a second term.

Beth Mugo  – 21 years

The 81-year old Nominated Senator is the third fourth-longest serving legislature in Kenya at the moment.

She was first elected as a member of parliament in 1992 representing the Dagoretti constituency. She won the parliamentary seat in five consecutive elections.

Moses Wetangula – 21 years

The Bungoma Senator first went into parliament in 1992 as a KANU nominated MP. Wetangula, however, did not make it back to the parliament in the 1997 election. He had to till 2002 where he served for two terms before moving to the Senate in 2013 where currently serves his second term.
