Kenya Met Predicts Brief Rainfall Pause, Lists Areas Where Showers to Resume Over the Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast a brief pause in rainfall across several parts of the country.

According to the latest outlook for March 11–17, the rains will subside midweek, with showers expected to resume towards the weekend.

Kenya Met predicts that rainfall will continue over regions such as the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County.

Other areas expected to experience ongoing rainfall include the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coast, and parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

However, the intensity of the rainfall will decrease between Thursday and Saturday before picking up again from Sunday, March 16.

Western and Rift Valley Regions

For areas within the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley—including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, and Kakamega Counties—showers will be experienced as follows:

  • Thursday to Saturday: Light showers are expected in some areas, with sunny intervals on Saturday.
  • Sunday to Monday: Rainfall will return with showers expected over several places.

Maximum temperatures in these regions will reach 35°C.

Eastern Highlands and Nairobi

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley—including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi Counties—the weather will unfold as follows:

  • Thursday: Morning rains over a few areas, with afternoon showers.
  • Friday to Saturday: Mostly sunny with occasional showers.
  • Sunday to Monday: Showers will increase over several areas.

Maximum temperatures in these regions will reach 30°C.

Northwestern Kenya

For Northwestern Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu Counties:

  • Thursday to Saturday: Predominantly sunny and dry conditions.
  • Sunday to Monday: Rainfall is expected to return to parts of the region.

Maximum temperatures in these areas will peak at 39°C.

Northeastern Kenya

In Northeastern Kenya, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties:

  • Thursday: Morning rains in some areas.
  • Friday to Saturday: Mostly sunny with minimal rainfall.
  • Sunday to Monday: Evening showers expected.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 39°C.

Southeastern Lowlands

In the Southeastern Lowlands—including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River Counties:

  • Thursday: Morning rains followed by afternoon showers.
  • Friday to Saturday: Dry spell with sunny conditions.
  • Sunday to Monday: Rainfall will return.

The maximum temperature in these areas will reach 34°C.

Coastal Region

In the Coastal Region—including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal Tana River Counties:

  • Thursday to Saturday: Mostly sunny conditions.
  • Sunday to Monday: Rainfall will return in the afternoon and night.

Maximum temperatures will reach 34°C.

“This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this Department. County-specific forecasts are available from the offices of respective County Directors of Meteorological Services,” said Kenya Met Director David Gikungu.
