“My Son Did Not Kill” Jowie Irungu’s Mother Speaks After His Sentencing

Jowie Irungu’s mother is not convinced that he murdered the late businesswoman Monica Kimani in cold blood.

Speaking after Jowie’s sentencing at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, she however said that her son will be released from prison at the right time, while comparing his situation like the Biblical Joseph’s

“I believe my son is innocent, hajafanya kosa lolote, hajaua. Kuna kitu ninaamini, kuna God of a second chance  na atamtoa  na ndio unaona niko na nguvu kwasababu Mungu mwenye ninaamini ndiye atamtoa. It is like Joseph  alidhulumwa na mungu baadaye alimtoa na hata naamini sasaatamtoa wakati wa mungu ukifika,” she said.

In her sentencing, Lady Justice Grace Nzioka ruled that Jowie intentionally murdered Monica in  2018, in a brutal and horrific manner.

“It was not a defensive act. It was not out of provocation. It was planned, intended and executed,” the judge said.

“Based on what I have said, I have ordered that the first accused before this court, Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie, shall suffer death as provided for the offence of murder under section 204 of the penal code of Kenya. That is the order of the court.”

In his presentencing report, Jowie had begged the court not to hand him a death penalty, after he was found guilty of the murder on February 9.

During the sentencing, the judge went through Jowie’s submission where he acknowledged that nothing he would say will relieve the pain of Monica’s family.

“He says he expresses his sadness that such a tragic loss of life on extreme circumstances bordering on absolute madness beyond understanding even for him,” the judge said. “That the family of the deceased will find peace and that her soul rests in peace.”
