Kenyan Companies Paying Employees Peanuts

Kenya is currently experiencing a high cost of living and a high rate of unemployment, a situation that has left many youths in the country desperate for jobs.

Due to these unfortunate conditions, some Kenyan companies have seen an opportunity to take advantage of their employees. These companies see their employees as liabilities or a bunch of people who can’t survive without their pay. As a result, they expose them to harsh working environments with little pay.

The employees on their side fear demanding better pay fearing they might be fired hence forcing them to survive with the little pay.

Here are some of the companies in Kenya you are likely to be paid peanut salaries.

Kencall

Kencall is a reputable company in Kenya. It prides itself as the first international contact center in the country serving clients in Kenya, UK, and the US. Within the company, you will find world-call facilities incorporated with state-of-the-art technology. With all these reputations, you would imagine how well the company pays its employees but on paper, it’s the opposite.

The owners of the companies mint billions of shillings from the business but pay their employees peanuts. Some employees here reportedly earn as low as Ksh.15,000 despite being overworked.

KBC

Most workers at the state-run-media organization work hard but are paid less. According to reports, some employees- even the highly educated – at KBC are paid between Ksh.8,0000 and Ksh.30,000. Reports also claim that the rate of pay also depends on how well connected you are in the company. If you are well connected you might get better pay but if you are not, you will have to excuse yourself with a token-like salary.

The poor pay at KBC is evident in the rate at which experienced journalists and reports leave the station seeking better pay in other media houses.

Brookside Dairy Ltd

Brookside dairy is owned by the Kenyatta family. Despite being owned by one of the wealthiest families in Kenya, the milk company pays employees peanuts. Here, according to reports, it is the managers who are paid the highest which the employees at the bottom are paid less.

A starting salary of an employee of the milk processing company is as low as Ksh.15,000.

Apart from Brookside other milk processing companies that pay less include Fresher and Daima milk factories.

Amaco Insurance firms

The average salary of an employee at this insurance firm is Ksh.25,000. On the other hand, top managers surprisingly earn as high as Ksh.6,000,000 a month.

Amaco is not the only insurance firm paying their employees peanuts. Others include Kenindia and Madison insurance companies.

Mediamax

This is another Kenyatta’s owned company that pays employees minimal salaries. At Mediamax, top journalists and reporters are paid up to a million Kenyan shillings while several junior journalists and reporters are paid as low as Ksh.25,000.

Despite paying minimal salaries to the junior staff, the media house has a habit of imposing heavy salary cuts and unceremonious layoffs.
