Bahati severally resisted calls from Raila Odinga and Azimio camp to step down in favour of Anthony Oluoch in Mathare parliamentary race.
Oluoch was said to be the most popular candidate in the race and Azimio wanted Bahati to step down so that they could consolidate their votes.
Attempts by Raila to promise Bahati a government did little to convince Bahati to step down for ODM’s Oluoch.
The singer begged President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga to allow him to contest in the race.
Well, Bahati finished a distant third in Mathare parliamentary seat – garnering 8,166 votes against the winner Anthony Oluoch who managed 28,098 votes.
UDA’s Bilian Ojiwa came second after securing 16,912 votes.
In Homa Bay county, Dennitah Ghati is another candidate who defied Raila’s call to step aside and ultimately paid a big price.
Ghati of ODM was floored by Independent candidate Fatuma Mohamed who won the Homa Bay Women Representative seat.
Mohamed garnered 154,538 votes beating her main rival Ghati of who managed 117,597 votes.
In April, Mohamed headlines after claiming that she had been rigged out during the ODM party primaries.
Mohamed was captured in a viral video blasting the ODM party leadership for allegedly shortchanging her in favour of Ghati, who won the ODM party ticket.
While protesting at the Migori TTC tallying centre, Mohamed claimed lamented that Raila pleaded with Ghati to step down in her favour but she refused completely.
“Ghati was not popular and even Raila told her twice to step aside, but she refused. I won this nomination the same way I did in the last two elections and my victory was given to others. This is unfair,” an angry Mohamed lamented.
“I have been very fair to the party. Why me? Why me? I have been spending millions and I sold my house worth Ksh25 million to prove that I want to be a woman representative,” she added.
In Kibra, outgoing MP Imran Okoth turned down Raila’s request to step down in favor of the ODM candidate Peter Orero.
Okoth chose to vie as an independent after losing in the ODM primaries.
Raila pleaded with Okoth in vain to step down in favour of Orero, even assuring him of a government job.
Orero ultimately won the Kibra MP seat with 33,008 votes. McDonald Mariga who vied on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket came in second with 20,049 votes while Imran Okoth came a distant third with 18,901 votes.
