Super Metro is one of the leading matatu Saccos in Nairobi but the company is facing backlash and cancel threats. Kenyans are threatening to boycott the Sacco’s buses after a male passenger identified as Gideon Thuku Kimani was pushed from a moving bus, leading to his death.
According to eye witnesses, Thuku got into an altercation with the conductor after he failed to raise the Kshs.80 that was required for his bus fare. Apparently, he only had Kshs.50 in his pocket.
The incident involving the bus with registration number KDL 125N, happened along Thika Road at Kahawa Sukari. The deceased was heading to Thika and the bus was coming from Kahawa Wendani. After being pushed, it is reported that the bus ran over him with its rear tyre.
After the turn of events, the bus is said to have sped off from the scene. David Nderitu who was driving the bus of the fateful day has since been arrested.
“So far the driver has been arrested and the vehicle impounded awaiting inspection…the driver will be charged for causing death by dangerous driving,” said Ruiru Police Commander Charles Kibathi.
Thuku’s incident has however brought back memories of other serious incidents that the Sacco has been involved in in the past. They include;
Super metro driver reverses along a busy highway
This is another incident that was captured on camera around March last year. A driver of a bus attached to Super Metro was recorded reversing and driving against traffic along Thika Road.
Super Metro CEO Nelson Nduki however told the media that the driver and conductor attached to the bus in question were arrested by traffic police.
Assault of a female passenger by crew
In August 7, 2018, a female passenger identified as Wairimu Muthoni was assaulted and violently thrown out of a Super Metro bus. The scuffle ensued after Wairimu demanded to be allowed to exit the bus after realising that it was heading to the wrong direction. She was accosted over the fare, a move that saw her get assaulted, humiliated and robbed off her personal belongings.
In January this year, Wairimu finally found justice over the incident, when the High Court awarded her kshs420,000. Milimani High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi directed the Director of Super Metro Sacco and the owner of the bus that was involved Ezekiel Njuguna to compensate Wairimu with the said amount of money saying that her rights were violated by the actions of the matatu crew.
Scuffle between Super Metro driver and Uber driver
In another road rage that captured the attention of netizens in March last year, a Super Metro bus driver got into an argument with an Uber driver that resulted to the Uber driver sustaining injuries.
Apparently, the Super Metro driver scratched the taxi and the taxi driver retaliated by knocking the Super Metro bus from behind. The move saw a group of individuals descend on the cab driver.
In a statement, Super Metro however confirmed that their driver did not participate in the physical assault.
“Otherwise, our driver was not involved in the fight. We requested they give us our vehicle back because we did not ask any of those who took place in the fight to do so or even act on our company’s behalf. We do follow procedures and let the law prevail in such incidences,” said Super Metro Inspector Simon Gitau.
Both cars were taken to Ruaraka police station.
