Lupita Nyong’o was accused of having a romantic relationship between herself and Janelle Monae.
Since their encounter at the Met Gala in 2014, when Lupita Nyong’o was a rising star in the entertainment industry and had earned an Oscar for her role in “12 Years a Slave,” the two have developed a strong friendship.
“Janelle came up to me and just gave me the realest hug,” “She was just like, I’m so proud of you, and just thank you for being you.” Lupita said. 
In 2018, Monae openly discussed identifying as pan-sexual. She later disclosed she uses a non-binary identity and expressed the use of both she/her and they/them pronouns.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Nyong’o addressed the speculations about a past romance between herself and Monae, stating, “She possesses a captivating charm that people were clearly sensing. She has that elusive quality. I wasn’t taken aback by it. Besides, I have no qualms about being linked to her in any manner,” she says.
Although they maintain a close friendship, miss Nyong’o is currently in a relationship with television host and designer Selema Masekela, she mentioned that there are still aspects of Monae’s life that remain unknown to her.
