Michael Olunga Vs Victor Wanyama: Who Is Kenya’s Richest Footballer?

Michael Olunga and Victor Wanyama are the two richest Kenyan footballers earning millions of shillings per week from their foreign clubs.

The 27-year-old Kenyan international striker has always made an impact for the teams he has played for.

Olunga made headlines while playing for For Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia. His success at K’Ogallo saw Swedish side Djugardens sign him in 2016.

Olunga made only 27 appearances for Djugardens scoring 12 times. He was signed by Chinese club Ghuizhou Zhicheng after only one season in Sweden.

The Harambee Stars striker only made 9 appearances for Ghuizhou Zhicheng scoring 2 goals before being loaned to Spanish side Girona Fc. He made 14 appearances scoring 3 goals.

In 2018, the Chinese club sold Olunga to Kashiwa Reysol for an undisclosed fee. Olunga’s star only shined brighter in Japan where he scored 58 goals in 72 appearances.

While playing for the Japanese side, Olunga saw his goal-scoring streak win him the Golden Boot Award in the J1 League in 2020.

In January 2021, Olunga moved to Qatar Stars League champions Al-Duhail on a three-seasons contract for a reported transfer fee of Ksh.896 million.

According to Olunga’s contract, Al-Duhail is paying him twice the amount he used to earn at Kashiwa Reysol.

In Japan, Olunga used to earn of Ksh.15 million a month, meaning he now earns Ksh.30 million a month at Al-Duhail, or Ksh 7.5 million a week or Ksh.1 million a day.

Victor Wanyama currently plays for Montreal Impact and earns a salary of Ksh £62,000/Ksh 9.3 million per week or £62,000/Ksh.37 million a month.

Wanyama is richer than Olunga having played for a number of clubs in several elite divisions from a young age, including the English Premier League where they pay serious money.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder spent three years in Southampton and made 85 appearances for the club from 2013 to 2016.

In 2016, he was signed by Tottenham Hotspur, where he played 69 times before being released to the Canadian side Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2020.

The Harambee Stars captain signed a three year $13.2 million contract with Montreal Impact which made him the 5th most valuable player in MLS.
