Makena Njeri still regrets why she attended a church service after coming out as a lesbian, it was the last time she set her foot in church.
The popular lesbian opened up about her experience in church after coming out while speaking during an interview with Sauti Sol’s Bien.
She told Bien that she is a Christian and that she used to go to church until she was discriminated upon.
Makena said she was chased from church by the cold reception she was accorded by everyone after she publicly came out as a lesbian.
“I have said this so many times I am a Christian, I love going to Church but I stopped going to church the moment that I came out. Because immediately I walked into church and I did not fell safe anymore. Because from the priest to the women, the choir, the people who were seated right next to me… it’s just like ‘what are you doing in church and we watched your TED Talk two days ago?'” Makena Njeri said.
The popular lesbian said that she opted to pray to her God while at home and live the truth as she has her own peace of mind. She said she can’t be a pretender to please the church.
“When we were growing up we were always told church is a safe space but it changes immediately when you start living the truth. I would be comfortably still be going to church if there was no judgment but religion has been to weaponize completely.”
