Amid the ongoing protests against the Finance Bill 2024, Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o has expressed her solidarity with the Kenyan youth.
Her statement comes on the heels of a chaotic day in Nairobi, where protesters breached Parliament, causing extensive damage.
President William Ruto’s response to the demonstrations has further fueled public discontent, leading to heightened tensions across the nation.
Lupita Nyong’o, known for her activism and powerful voice on social issues, commended the unity and determination of the Kenyan youth in their opposition to the Finance Bill 2024.
“I salute the Kenyan youth and I am grateful to them for coming together in an extraordinary way to stand up against the problematic Finance Bill 2024 as well as to defend and promote the democratic rights of the Kenyan people,” she stated.
The actress also acknowledged the tragic loss of lives during the protests, offering her condolences to the families of the victims.
“I am extremely saddened that lives have been lost in the process, and my thoughts are with the victims’ families,” Nyong’o added.
Her message urged the Kenyan government to address the protesters’ concerns and work towards national unity.
“May the government of Kenya aim to peacefully unify the nation by hearing and addressing the concerns about bad governance that are rightfully being raised,” she concluded, using the hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024 to underscore her stance.
The protests on Tuesday, June 25, took a dramatic turn as enraged youth overpowered security forces and stormed the Parliament building.
The demonstrators caused significant damage, looting, and destroying various items within the premises, highlighting the intensity of their frustration.
