Kenya Wierd Laws You Are Probably Not Following

In most cases, people only pay attention to “serious laws” but pay little attention to the minor ones. In fact, most people have been breaking the perceived minor laws every day without knowing they exist.

Below are some of those laws in Kenya that seem weird or minor but they exist and if one goes against them, they can get into serious trouble.

College of Arms Law

The law allowed anyone in Kenya to have a coast of arms – an official shield or seal.

Learning institutions have their coat of arms as well as the country coat of arms which features a lion, shield, and spears. The country’s arms have unique sigils which must be registered.

Giving Directions.

Within Nairobi County, it is illegal to signal a guide or give direction to a driver of a vehicle in and out of a parking place.

McMillan Memorial Library Act

The iconic McMillan Memorial Library is the only building in the country protects by an Act of Parliament.

The McMillan Memorial Library Act was passed in 1938 and has been amended six times, with the last amendment being 1966.

According to the law, the land where the library sit cannot be sold. The law requires that for the property to be sold, then the law must either be repealed or amended, and even then, the building would remain under the Sites and Monuments Act.

Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act

Probably you might have broken this law. Did you know that it is illegal to slaughter your chicken or any other animal in the presence of its fellows? If you did know now you know.

The Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act seeks to protect animals from the trauma of seeing other animals being slaughtered n their presence.

This law also illegalized organizing animal fights and poisoning animals unless the animal is a rat, mice, or any other vermin.

Street Naming

This law makes make it possible for common mwananchi to arm-twist the local authority to register a street but under some guidelines.

To register a street, the locals will need to apply and if the application is approved, the citizens can go ahead and level, pave, channel, light, sewer, and install drainage for the street so that the local authority will name the street after a person.

Keeping Dogs

If you wish to keep a dog older than four months within Nairobi, then you will need to get a license from the county government. The county government argues that dogs above this age, bark and cause nuisance to neighbors.

The only dogs you can keep within Nairobi without a license are those used by the visually impaired and police sniffer dogs.
