Mary Lincon dropped out of school, worked odd jobs such as househelp before her big break came.
The Kikuyu gospel singer opened up about her rise from nothing to something while speaking during an interview on Kameme FM.
Mary Lincon revealed she never cleared her secondary education as she dropped out of school and ran away from home.
The singer said she ran away from home because of poverty and sought her first job as a househelp in Nairobi.
“I never studied past form 3. At one point there was a lot of hunger, livestock would die and it was not easy to find food to eat. So I ran away from home. I only had 30 bob in my pockets,” Mary Lincon said.
“I went to start working as a house help. I met someone whose daughter in Nairobi wanted a house help in Embakasi,” she added.
Mary Lincon further disclosed that she assumed false identity, calling herself ‘Betty’ so that her family could not trace her.
“At the time I did not even have an ID. My parents were looking for me even via radio stations but I had changed my name to Betty. After almost a year I started missing my people. One time I communicated to my sister and explained where I was.
“She duped me into letting her come see me to which she agreed, Unknown to me she brought along other people. That is how I went back home.”
Even though she returned home, Mary Lincon did not go back to complete her secondary education instead she enrolled in hairdressing school in Gikomba.
“After the incident, I did not want to go back to school. My sister enrolled me in a hair school in Gikomba.”
It was while she was working as a hairdresser in Gikomba that Mary Lincon discovered her music career.
Her music career struggled to take off but her big break came when she met veteran Kikuyu radio presenter Njogu Wa Njoroge who gave her music airplay leading to her breakthrough.
Mary Lincon ultimately got married to Njogu Wa Njoroge as his second wife in August 2020, in a traditional wedding that was the talk of the town.
However, Njogu Wa Njoroge dumped her after she cheated on him. In November 2022 the nudes she was sending another man leaked online causing the breakup.
Mary Lincon in the same interview with Kameme FM however denied that she was ever married to Njogu Wa Njoroge.
