Jamal Marlow Rohosafi started as a makanga (conductor), then a matatu driver before he eventually bought his own matatu and built an empire.
The Matatu Operators Association chairman opened up about his multimillion shillings business during an interview with Mpasho.
Jamal reveals that he currently owns 32 matatus which ply different routes in Nairobi.
“Matatu is part of my life, I have 32 Matatus. Every weekend I am in the garage, interacting with my crew….its part of my passion. I live, breathe and talk Matatu,” Jamal said.
The Matatu Operators Association chairman further revealed that he joined the matatu industry working as a makanga (conductor) before he transitioned to being a driver.
He saved his income and bought his own matatu which literally built his matatu empire.
“In 2009 I was a conductor….2011-2013 I was a driver. Then came to own more than 6 Saccos and became the Chairman of Operators,” said Jamal.
Jamal is still expanding his matatu empire, early this year he launched a microfinance company called Huduma Credit that offers loans to matatu operators.
The Matatu Operators Association chairman hired Betty Kyallo to be the face of his microfinance company – she will be working as Huduma Credit’s brand ambassador.
