Diana Marua has always been open about her life’s journey, and her recent YouTube session was no exception.
In a heartfelt discussion with her fans, she revisited her early years and the various challenges she navigated before achieving her current success and lifestyle.
Diana began by highlighting her humble beginnings, revealing that her first job was not as an MPESA agent, as many believe.
Instead, she was initially employed selling SIM cards for the YU mobile network.
She reminisced about her early mornings spent hustling together with her then-boyfriend.
They would rise at 4:30 a.m. and meet by 5:00 a.m. to prepare for a day of client meetings starting at 6:00 a.m.
“Tulikuwa tunaamka asubuhi 4:30 tunapatana 5:00, tunaenda tunapatana na clients 6 na tunapewaa targtes then tunaambiwa twende tuuze lines Kibera,” she explained, sharing how their hard work often resulted in selling up to 100 lines by day’s end.
After her experience selling SIM cards, Diana transitioned to working as an MPESA agent, a pivotal role that significantly altered her life path.
This job, located within a pharmacy, opened new doors for Diana and allowed her to dream of a brighter future.
“That’s where my life changed. I began to envision a better life for myself,” she noted, recalling how an encounter with a customer led to her next opportunity.
Diana shared that, while seated at her MPESA booth, a customer inquired about withdrawing money, and their conversation sparked a turning point.
“Nilikuwa nimekaa nasoma gazeti and someone comes and tells me ‘Hi nataka kuwithdraw some money’. I used to wear lab coats so nilikuwa nakaa kama one of the people wenye wanauza madawa,” she recalled, recounting how the customer handed her his business card and encouraged her to send him her CV.
At the time, Diana was living in Baba Dogo, having left her home and dropped out of school.
With her then-boyfriend’s support, who worked in IT, she was able to put together a CV and apply for a new position.
Two days later, Diana received a call for an interview, which filled her with both anticipation and anxiety.
When she faced the interview panel of six people, her nerves were palpable. Yet, despite her lack of experience and confidence, Diana was offered a job with a starting salary that exceeded her expectations.
“Nilienda interview nikapata a board of six people. I was trembling. I didn’t have experience or communication skills. They asked me how much I would love to be paid and I said Sh15K. They offered me Sh22K. I got the job out of favour and God’s grace. I stayed there for close to four years,” she shared.
Even after securing a stable job, Diana confronted personal challenges.
She disclosed that the friend she was living with at the time unexpectedly kicked her out, prompting her to move in with her boyfriend for a little while.
Unbeknownst to him, she was also involved with another boyfriend who lived abroad.
“One day, the girl I was staying with packed my clothes and kicked me out. I moved in with my boyfriend at the time for two months,” she revealed. “I also had a boyfriend abroad who felt sorry for me when I told him what happened. But I was strategic about my life and knew what I wanted.”
It’s not the first time that Diana Marua is opening up about double dealing men.
