Five Kenyan Footballers Who Were Trashed After Suffering An Injury

Football might be an interesting game but sometimes it has some painful side. Since it’s a physical game, sometimes players get serious injuries from the game.

These injuries can sometimes be so serious that end up affecting players playing form. In a scenario where a player gets an injury, it is normally the responsibility of the club he plays for that ensures that he is treated and gets back to the form he had before the injury.

This is, however, not the case in the Kenya Premier League where sometimes football clubs abandon their players once they sustain an injury.

Some of the players that have been abandoned by their clubs after sustaining an injury include;

Dan Matengo

Injured while playing for Kogalo, Dan Matengo was forced to seek the help of well-wishers to be treated for a fracture he suffered in 2006.

Matengo’s injury was so serious that many thought he would never kick a ball again. He, however, recovered and two years later moved from Gor Mahia to Tusker.

Benedict Owuor

Former KCB captain and defender Benedict Owour was left fuming after the club released him to join another club on the final day of the 2014 mid-season transfer window.

Owuor got injured in a match between KCB and Gor Mahia in that season and was expected to undergo surgery after an MRI scan confirmed that he had torn his meniscus.

However, the decision by the club to free him left him in a shocker as he was left with a huge medical bill. According to KCB, Owuor had ended his contract with them hence did not need to keep him.

Philemon Otieno

In 2019, Philemon Otieno underwent knee surgery after four months of waiting with the Football Kenya Federation and his club Gor Mahia tussling on who to pay for his medical bill.

The player was injured during the return leg of the first round 2020 African Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier between Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars. FKF told him to wait for treatment until they find the money for his treatment. Realizing his career was in danger he decided to go to the hospital by himself.

His treatment cost rose to Ksh.450,000 forcing him to use his savings and money raised by his family members and friends.

Solomon Nasio

Another Gor Mahia player on the list is Solomon Nasio who was forced to rely on well-wishers to get medical treatment after breaking his nose in 2013.

The player needed Ksh.150,000 for surgery and Gor pledged to help. The club, however, took too long to foot his medical bill forcing fans to come to his rescue.

Gor claimed that their lucked funds to help the player play for his medical bills.

Harry Gentle

The Nigerian defender suffered a metatarsal injury while playing for AFC Leopards. The injury forced the player to be sidelined for the entire 2010 season.

Gentle claimed that the injury made the club sack him without pay nor assist him with his medical expenses. He revealed that he had to rely on well-wishers, friends, and family to raise his medical bills.
