Former NTV anchor Dr. King’ori recently opened up about an incident from 2013 when he and fellow comedian YY tried to hire a prostitute along Nairobi’s infamous Koinange Street.
In an interview on the Mic Cheque Podcast, King’ori candidly shared how their plans to “support” the local sex industry backfired due to nerves and an uncooperative driver.
Dr. King’ori explained that during a period of “dry spell,” he and YY Comedian decided to try their luck on Koinange Street, a location known for its commercial sex workers.
Together with their driver, who owned a hired car, the two comedians attempted to negotiate for services but were not bold enough to approach the women directly.
“There was a time around 2013 when the dry spell hit YY and me hard, so we decided to try supporting the Koinange industry. We spent a lot of money on the car, but we didn’t know how to even begin,” King’ori said.
He revealed that the driver charged them extra each time they passed an area where sex workers were standing, showing them potential spots but not allowing any interaction to happen in the vehicle.
This was before ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt were available in Nairobi, and they were reliant on a hired driver who was reluctant to get too involved.
“Our driver was the biggest hypocrite I’ve ever seen. After taking us around the whole time, he gave us a disclaimer, saying no one should catch anything in his car because he had given his life to Christ,” King’ori joked.
In the end, the comedians did muster up the courage to approach the women, but the high prices ultimately dissuaded them from following through on their initial plan.
