In a bold statement that has caught the attention of fans everywhere, Kenyan singer and entrepreneur Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, delivered a stern warning against investing emotionally in celebrity relationships.
The 43-year-old artiste, who’s had her share of romantic entanglements, weighed in on the recent divorce of Hollywood power couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.
Taking to Instagram, Akothee expressed her thoughts on the public’s fascination with celebrity relationship drama, highlighting the stark contrast between the scrutiny faced by stars and the challenges ordinary people endure in their love lives.
“Living with another person can be very difficult—people often struggle with it! I never fully understood the complexity of Jennifer Lopez’s love life until I found myself in such a messy situation,” she shared.
In her candid remarks, Akothee pointed out that celebrities often serve as role models, yet their turbulent relationships reflect dysfunctionality that isn’t exclusive to the famous.
“The truth is, you just have to pick your poison, swallow it, and move on,” she added, suggesting that behind the glamor, celebrity romances can be as tough as any.
She further criticized how public breakups are treated as headline news, while similar struggles faced by everyday people frequently go unnoticed.
“Celebrities are often prime examples of dysfunctional relationships, early dating, and delayed marriage. It’s not that non-famous people don’t experience the same issues — in fact, their situations can be worse,” Akothee noted.
She encouraged fans to rethink their emotional investment in celebrity unions, asserting, “It’s high time people stop investing their emotions in celebrity marriages and relationships. We will stop disappointing you every day.🤣🤣”
Wrapping up her Instagram session, Akothee extended a light-hearted but meaningful message to Jennifer Lopez, advising her on handling her relationship with Ben Affleck.
“I wish Jennifer all the best. To her, I say, ‘Mom, don’t leave or go back to the market; just stay. If you feel like going back to Ben, and your heart still beats for him, call the divorce lawyers and tell them to keep it paused for now 🤣🤣’ When things go wrong, relationships are not for the weak, but love is sweet,” she concluded.
Lopez and Affleck’s divorce comes after months of reports about a growing rift between the couple, who tied the knot in July 2022.
After months of speculations about their marital woes, Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on August 20, 2024.
It’s J-Lo’s 4th divorce having been married four times before with all of her past marriages hitting rock bottom.
The 55-year-old singer-cum-actress was previously married to Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003, and Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme, from 2004 to 2014.
Her latest divorce from Ben Affleck comes just 11 months into their failed 4th marriage.
Just like Jennifer Lopez, Akothee has also not been lucky when it comes to love and marriage.
Akothee got married to her childhood sweetheart Jared Okello at the age of 13 when she was still a student in high school in Homa Bay County.
She got her first baby at the age of 14, and by 16 she had already delivered four kids. (One died shortly after delivery).
Her marriage to Jared Otieno, the father of her elder daughters, officially ended in 2011 after a divorce case filed in 2007.
After parting ways with Jared, Akothee relocated to Mombasa with hopes of finding employment.
During her time in Mombasa, Akothee fell for a Frenchman while working as a taxi driver. He sired her fourth child a son named Ojwang.
However, the romantic relationship ended in prime tears for Akothee who was disappointed by her French baby daddy.
Akothee found love again in an elderly Swiss Dominic Decherf who fathered her youngest son Oyoo.
The relationship with the Swiss also failed the test of time and Akothee once again found herself in the dating market.
Akothee dated multiple men including musician Brown Mauzo (Vera Sidika’s baby daddy), her manager Nelson Oyugi aka Nelly Oaks before she took a second stab at marriage.
The mother of five remarried in 2023.
She tied the knot with Swiss/Pakistani national named Denis ‘Omosh’ Schweizer in a colourful wedding ceremony that was held on April 10, 2023.
However, Akothee broke up with Omosh in June during their honeymoon.
During a live session on October 31, 2023, the mother of five addressed her relationship status, emphasizing her decision to end her marriage.
Akothee stated that the breakup occurred during their honeymoon in June 2023 when she discovered that there were aspects of their relationship she couldn’t tolerate.
“Omosh is not the first man in my life. So, from today henceforth, know that it is done and dusted with Omosh. I walked out of the relationship back in June. I normally walk out of a relationship when I am still in the relationship.
“When we were on honeymoon, I found out some things that I could not keep up with and then he asked me if I would dump him and I said no, ‘I love you’. When I was living in Switzerland in July 2023, at the airport he asked me, ‘will you leave me? I said no honey, I love you but for sure, I had already left,” Akothee explained.
The singer chose not to delve into specific details out of respect for Denis, expressing gratitude for his support during a challenging period in her life.
