Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama on, Monday September 27, announced his retirement from football.
The FC Montreal midfielder quit the international football after 14 years of playing with the Kenya’s national team.
The 31-year-old cited various reasons for his decision. First, he noted that he wanted to give room for young Kenyan football players to also play for the national team.
Second, Wanyama also hinted that he could one day return to the Kenyan football scene as an official of the corruption marred; Football Kenya Federation.
“The time has come to hand over the team to the next generation so that they too can make their mark and help our country reach even greater heights.
“I hope to return one day to help the federation off the field,” Wanyama said.
Wanyama’s decision to quit Kenya’s football follows a series of times he has been overlooked by the national teams that has been undergoing restructuring for the last few months.
He was recently overlooked by the national team’s former Head Coach Jacob Ghost Mulee during the recent World Cup qualifiers matches between Harambee Stars and Uganda and Rwanda too.
Mulee preferred to play a midfield axis if Lawrence Juma, Kenneth Muguna and Richard Odada without the former Tottenham Hotspurs man.
He also quits after he was stripped off the captain’s armband which was given to striker Michael Olunga.
Other than Wanyama, other regular players that were tripped from the national team include Ayumb Timbe and Johanna Omollo.
