Kenyan songbird Habida moved to the UK when she was still underage to avoid the conflict that had pitted her against her father.
Speaking during an interview with a local news outlet, Habida said her father wanted her to pursue a career in law after completing secondary education yet she didn’t want to go in that direction.
Habida said her move to resist attempts to force her to pursue law put her on a collision course with her dad.
“I had problems going to school kwa sababu kuwa msanii in my days was not popular with most parents. My father wanted me to do law. Those who know me understand that I’m an activist. I don’t shy away from speaking my mind, and I fight for rights, lakini hizo vitabu kubwa siwezi. I can’t sit down for long. So we had our battles. I had to leave home at 16. I had no idea what I was doing but I knew I needed to go,” Habida said.
Habida found herself fleeing home and traveling thousands of kilometers to London where she was inspired to follow her dream to be a musician.
She took on a job as a waitress while actively seeking producers to collaborate with. However, her big break in music came when she returned home and collaborated with Nameless on their mega hit ‘Sunshine’.
‘Sunshine’ turned Habida into a superstar as the song was so big dominating airwaves in Kenya and beyond the country’s borders.
This marked a turning point in her journey, opening doors to numerous opportunities. However, she emphasises that her ambitions are far from fulfilled, as she aspires for greater recognition.
“Ilifungua milango mingi sana. Lakini bado sijafika. I have big dreams. I want recognition,” Habida said.
