National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called out DP Rigathi Gachagua over his televised press briefing, that came just hours to his much anticipated impeachment motion.
Speaking during the parliament proceedings on Tuesday, the speaker noted that Standing Order 85 prohibits both MPs and Non-Mps from from preempting motions whose notices have been issued.
“I will not act as a judge in this matter, but I must put on record that the Deputy President’s conduct was, to say the least, abhorrent, especially considering the ongoing parliamentary proceedings.
“Standing Order 85 explicitly prohibits members of this House from preempting debate on a motion for which notice has been issued. When interpreted broadly, the order also applies to non-members, particularly those directly affected by such motions,” Wetang’ula said.
According to him, the DP should have refrained from the media interview, as he would have time to defend himself in parliament.
“Given that the special motion is scheduled for debate and a vote today, I believe the Deputy President should have shown restraint and avoided the media interview.
“It is not a question of whether the Deputy President has been afforded an opportunity to defend himself before this House—he has. It is about upholding decorum and respecting the parliamentary process,” Wetang’ula said.
During the Monday evening press briefing, Gachagua responded to accusations that formed ground for his impeachment, saying that they are all lies and fabrications.
