Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has leveled startling accusations against the police and intelligence services, claiming in a letter to Inspector General Douglas Kanja that his life is in imminent danger.

The letter, dated April 15, 2025, paints a picture of a calculated campaign to eliminate him, alleging everything from police-orchestrated violence to clandestine surveillance by the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Gachagua’s letter is a litany of grievances, accusing IG Kanja of “clearly perpetuating crime and violence” and of deliberately withdrawing his security detail to make him vulnerable.

“You withdrew my security in a clear, thought-out scheme and backward conspiracy to make me vulnerable to organized criminal gangs in cohort with the Police and other Security Agencies,” Gachagua wrote.

Here are 10 of the most explosive claims made by Gachagua in his letter:

1. Police-Orchestrated Assassination Attempt

Gachagua alleges that on December 28, 2025, in Shamata, Nyandarua County, a police inspector and “organized criminal gangs” used teargas to disrupt his supporters, creating an opportunity for an assassination attempt.

2. NIS Surveillance and Stalking

He claims NIS operatives are constantly trailing him and his family in unmarked cars with “clandestine number plates.”

3. Police Harassment of Supporters

Gachagua asserts that on March 29, 2025, in Naivasha town, heavily armed police officers violently assaulted and harassed his supporters.

4. Police Interference with Public Gatherings

He alleges that police officers repeatedly disrupt and interfere with his peaceful gatherings.

5. Withdrawal of Security Detail

Gachagua accuses IG Kanja of deliberately withdrawing his security, leaving him vulnerable to attacks.

6. NIS Coordination with Criminal Gangs

He suggests a direct link between NIS surveillance and potential attacks, claiming they provide intelligence to criminal gangs.

7. Threats to His Family

Gachagua claims his family members are also being stalked and trailed by NIS operatives.

8. Lack of Protection for His Property

Gachagua demands protection for his home and property, implying they are also under threat.

9. Police Harassment of Staff

Gachagua accuses police of harassing his staff during his motorcade journey from Naivasha to Mai Mahiu.

10. Direct Warning to NIS

He warns the NIS that any further acts of violence or assassination attempts will be directly blamed on the agency.

Gachagua has issued a series of demands to IG Kanja, including the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the alleged violence, the reinstatement of his security detail, and a cessation of police interference with his public gatherings.

The former Deputy President’s letter has sent shockwaves through the Kenyan political landscape, raising serious questions about his safety and the alleged involvement of state security agencies.

The Inspector General of Police has yet to publicly respond to Gachagua’s allegations.
