Gospel singer Roy Smith Mwatia alias Rufftone revealed that his brother Owen Mwatia alias Daddy Owen almost attacked him with a machete over conflicting political ideologies.
Speaking during an interview on NTV on Tuesday January 25th, Rufftone narrated how his brother and him clashed because they were supporting different political parties in 2007.
“In 2007, I remember very boldly my blood brother Daddy Owen was supporting ODM, and I was supporting PNU, and when we disagreed in the morning, Daddy Owen and his friends ran out to the streets with machetes targeting me,” Rufftone said.
Rufftone, who is vying for Nairobi senator in August 9th general election, added that;
“I came to believe that politics is about ideologies, and if we defer with you politically, you don’t have to harm me, whether verbally or physically.”
However, while speaking to Citizen on Wednesday, Rufftone changed his story saying Daddy Owen never attacked him with a panga.
Rufftone claims he was caught up in the heat of the moment during the live interview on NTV and that was only using Daddy Owen as an example.
“There was too much pressure on the show. It was an illustration that spun out of control. What I meant by bringing in Daddy Owen was to make Kenyans realize that politics can infiltrate in between families and that is why I used the family example because it is what Kenyans understand best,” Rufftone explained.
Depicting a typical Kenyan politician with denial mentality, Rufftone further elaborated that using a machete he was symbolizing the anger his brother had during the said argument.
“When I said the machete I mean he went really sad and was very hurt. We are a peace-loving family,” said Rufftone.
Nevertheless Rufftone apologized for depicting his brother Daddy Owen as a goon.
“I’m sorry for what I said.. I take full responsibility, it was quite unfortunate. As a newbie in the political arena, the comments I made were my first national political platform on TV, so I ask Kenyans to forgive me.”
Daddy Owen also reacted to his brother’s revelation on NTV that he almost attacked him with a machete.
He expressed his solidarity with Rufftone saying that his brother was under pressure during the interview.
“I was very passionate about politics in 2007 and when ODM lost I was so disappointed but what I know is I never carried a panga and have never been violent because of politics. I think my brother was under pressure at that moment and had to use an illustration using my name,” said Daddy Owen.
