The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of another suspect linked to the fatal shooting of Kasipul MP, Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to twelve.
In a statement dated Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the DCI identified the latest suspect as Amos Barasa Kasili, who was arrested in Kibera Darajani area.
“ANOTHER SUSPECT LINKED TO THE FATAL SHOOTING OF HON. CHARLES WERE ARRESTED. In an intelligence-led operation, detectives have apprehended Amos Barasa Kasili at Kibera Darajani area, linking him to the tragic shooting of the late Kasipul MP, Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, which occurred on April 30, 2025,” the DCI said.
The agency revealed that Barasa was the rider of a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (registration number KMFZ 413W) used by the assailants to trail and later escape from the scene after the attack on the MP.
“This arrest follows a thorough investigation that forensically connected Barasa to the main suspects and placed him at the crime scene on that fateful day. Upon his arrest, Barasa was found in possession of the motorcycle in question.”
Further investigations uncovered that Barasa is a habitual criminal who masquerades as a Boda Boda operator, frequently working with armed criminal gangs. He allegedly received Ksh50,000 as payment for his involvement in the murder plot.
“During interrogation, he disclosed his involvement in the crime, revealing that he had been engaged by the main actors and received a payment of Ksh. 50,000 as part of his compensation.”
Crucially, the motorcycle recovered from Barasa matches the description of the bike captured by CCTV footage near Parliament, seen trailing the late MP’s vehicle shortly before the assassination.
The DCI also noted that profiling of the suspect revealed his extensive criminal background, including previous incarceration at Industrial Area Prison, where he met some of the other individuals involved in the murder.
“Barasa is currently being processed for arraignment as investigations continue, with authorities committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the DCI affirmed.
The arrest of Barasa brings the total number of suspects arrested so far to twelve, as detectives continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the cold-blooded killing of the legislator.
