In a dramatic political move, President Ruto today dismissed his Cabinet Secretaries (CS) on Thursday, July 11, 2024, sparking widespread public discourse and reactions from various political figures, including nominated Senator Karen Nyamu.
Karen Nyamu praised President Ruto for responding to the calls from Kenyans for a Cabinet shake-up.
“Of all the skills of leadership, listening is the most valuable. You spoke, and the president is executing one action at a time,” Nyamu stated in her message.
However, Nyamu singled out one of the dismissed Cabinet Secretaries, Kithure Kindiki, defending him and suggesting that the government should retain his services.
“Mr. President, anything you do for the sake of Kenya and our common good and future, you know your number 1 supporter. That gentleman Kindiki Kithure though, I wish he can be put into good use. We still need his energy and exemplary zeal,” she added.
President Ruto announced the dismissal of almost his entire cabinet and initiated consultations to form a broad-based government following widespread anti-government protests.
The decision applied to all Cabinet Secretaries, including the attorney general, but excluded Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations and other Kenyans, both in public and private, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government,” Ruto said in a televised address to the nation, adding that he would announce additional measures later.
The move comes in the wake of peaceful rallies last month to protest planned steep tax increases, which erupted into deadly violence. Police fired at crowds who stormed Parliament, leaving it partly ablaze, causing Kenya to reel from the ensuing chaos.
