Raila Odinga bodyguard George Oduor

The passing of George Oduor, Raila Odinga’s trusted and longtime bodyguard, has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance in Kenya.

Here are five key facts about the man who served one of Kenya’s most influential political figures for decades:

1. Decades of Service

George Oduor dedicated over 30 years of his life to protecting the Odinga family.

His service began with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila Odinga’s father, and continued seamlessly after Jaramogi’s death, when he became Raila’s close protection bodyguard.

2. Trusted Confidant

Oduor was more than just a bodyguard; he was a trusted confidant and advisor to Raila Odinga.

As ODM communications director Philip Etale noted, “This is one man who stood by me at all cost. I have lost a friend.”

Robert Alai, a member of the County Assembly for Kileleshwa, echoed this sentiment, saying, “You were more than an aide to Baba. You offered to us brotherly advice and sought to mentor us.”

3. Unwavering Loyalty

Raila Odinga himself acknowledged Oduor’s unwavering loyalty and dedication.

In a statement, Odinga described Oduor as “vigilant, calm, confident, extremely professional, dedicated to duty and a dependable rock on his side over the years through tumultuous periods.”

4. Service Through Tumultuous Times

Oduor’s service spanned some of the most politically charged periods in Kenya’s history.

He was a constant presence during Odinga’s long political career, navigating through elections, protests, and other significant events.

5. A Quiet Professional

Despite his proximity to high-profile political events, Oduor maintained a professional demeanor.

He was known for his calm, confident, and dedicated approach to his duties, earning him respect from those around him.

6. Fitness Enthusiast

Oduor was the most visible of Raila Odinga’s security detail, becoming a familiar face to many Kenyans.

A close friend revealed that Oduor grew up in Kaloleni, in Nairobi’s Eastlands area, and was deeply committed to physical fitness.

“He was keen on fitness training and weightlifting,” the friend said, highlighting his dedication to maintaining peak physical condition.

7. Trained Professional

Beyond his personal fitness, Oduor was a trained security professional.

He served as a police reservist and underwent VIP protection training both locally and internationally, ensuring he was equipped with the necessary skills to protect Raila Odinga.

George Oduor passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, while receiving treatment at Nairobi West Hospital after a short illness.

His death has left a void in Raila Odinga’s inner circle and has prompted widespread mourning from those who knew him.
