Members of the National Assembly, Senate and Kenyans in generally are demanding for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, who has widely been mentioned in the murder of Albert Ojwang’.

Ojwang’, a teacher by profession and an active social media user, met his death while in custody at the Central Police station. He was arrested for allegedly defaming Lagat and was transported all the way from Homa Bay to Nairobi by DCI officers, only for him to be subjected to torture leading to his untimely death.

The death has sparked protests in Nairobi with Ojwang’s young family and parents left in devastation.

Appearing before the national assembly committee on National Security on June 12, 2025, IG Douglas Kanja shed light on why Lagat was still in office as pressure for him to step aside to allow a thorough and impartial investigations in to the matter continues to mount.

Kanja said that IPOA, an independent body mandated to oversight police, was currently probing the matter and the next action as against his deputy will only be taken once the probe is concluded.

“There is an ongoing investigation by IPOA. Every person whose name will be mentioned as having played any role that led to the death of the late Albert Ojwang must record a statement,” Kanja said.

According to the police boss, it is not proper to compel Lagat to step aside because of public pressure and accusations based on speculations.

He however noted that Lagat will step aside if evidence in the ongoing on probe links him to the murder.

Meanwhile, The Star Newspaper has reported that Ojwang’ was picked from Central Police station on the night he was booked and tortured to midnight at Karura forest. His lifeless body was allegedly returned to the solitary cell after his attackers realised that he had slipped into a coma.
