The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert on strong winds and large waves that are likely to hit 15 counties between May 23 to May 25 2025.
The department said the moderate probability of occurrence ranges from 33 per cent to 66 percent.
The counties that are likely to be affected by the situation include; Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.
“Strong winds of more than 30knots(15.4m/s) are expected over the Coast, the South-Eastern low lands and Northwestern Kenya,” the weather man said.
On the other hand, ocean waves are likely to be higher than 2.0 metres over the Kenya coastal waters between Friday to Sunday.
“They are expected to reduce to below 2.0 meters on Monday, May 26,” the statement further read.
Residents of the mentioned areas have been urged to be on the lookout for gales and large waves from the Indian Ocean.
“Strong winds may blow off roofs and cause structural damage. Large waves may lower visibility and affect marine activities,” Kenya Met stated.
The weatherman has however issues three precautions that can be taken during the situation.
Firstly, it has advised residents to secure loose objects and structures. Secondly, residents have been urged against venturing to the ocean during the time. Finally, they have been urged to keenly follow updates from the meteorological department
Last month, Beijing City in China was hit by gales, which could easily blow away people weighing below 50kgs. Some of the precautions that were taken included;
- Suspension of outdoor activities including travelling
- Pruning of trees and reinforcing them to prevent them from causing destruction.
- Closing tourist parks and attractions
- Warning individuals against visiting forests and mountainous areas.
- Finally, locals were cautioned against starting outdoor fires.
