A General Service Unit (GSU) officer assigned to guard South Sudanese President Salva Kiir’s Nairobi residence has been arrested after allegedly shooting a fellow police officer during a dispute over bhang use.
The incident occurred in the upscale Gigiri neighborhood, a diplomatic zone home to embassies and high-profile residences.
According to preliminary reports, the GSU officer opened fire on his colleague after being confronted about smoking bhang while on duty.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that the injured officer had attempted to stop the GSU officer from using the illegal substance.
The situation quickly escalated, culminating in gunfire. The injured officer sustained a non-fatal wound and received medical attention.
For several minutes, Gigiri witnessed an intense standoff as police responded to the gunfire near President Kiir’s residence.
However, officers managed to disarm and arrest the suspect before the situation worsened.
The arrested officer remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, security around President Kiir’s residence has been reinforced to prevent any further incidents.
The National Police Service (NPS) has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
