The most popular Kenyan transgender is Audrey Mbugua. She was born Andrew Mbugua and he identified as a man until after university when she transitioned to a woman.
In October 2014, she won case to force the Kenya National Examinations Council to change her name on her academic certificates from Andrew Mbugua to Audrey Mbugua to conform with her female orientation.
Mbugua was born in Ndumberi, Kiambu County.

Despite having male organs and even socializing with boys, she claimed that as she grew up, she secretly believed she was a woman imprisoned in a man’s body.
She attended Kiambu High School from 1998 to 2001 before proceeding to Maseno University where she studied biomedical engineering from 2003 to 2007.
It was after university that Audrey started transitioning to a woman and encountered several legal hurdles in a country where homosexuality is a crime.
Audrey became the first transgender woman in East Africa to legally change his name in official documents and to register the first international transgender-led non-profit in Africa.
In July 2014 the High Court of Kenya ordered government of Kenya to register Mbugua’s lobby, Transgender Education and Advocacy, and pay its legal fees.
In October 2014, in a landmark case, the High Court of Kenya ordered the Kenya National Examinations Council to change Mbugua’s name on her academic certificates, which was listed as Andrew, and also to remove the male gender mark on them.
In 2018, the government of Kenya was ordered to pay Mbugua $300,000 to cover her legal costs and special damages.
Despite being an human right activist, Audrey is also businesswoman.
She has now completely transitioned into a woman, down to her high-pitched voice and use of feminine cosmetics.
