“Milango ya gereza imefunguka!” The state did not provide sufficient reasons to extend Pastor Ezekiel Odero’s stay in police cells.
On Thursday, May 4th, Senior Principal Magistrate Joe Omido of the Shanzu court ruled that Ezekiel Odero be released.
The New Life Church and Prayer Centre leader and entrepreneur had already spent seven days in police custody at Port Police.
He has also been ordered to report to a police station once a week or as required by the state.
Additionally, Odero is prohibited from discussing anything related to the Shakahola massacre.
The pastor had been presented before the Shanzu Law Courts, but the government failed to satisfy in their pursuit to press charges against him.
The detectives handling the case had requested an additional 30 days to detain him for further investigation, citing new information that called for his continued detention.
According to the state, the autopsy results on the Shakahola deaths provided “new information” and “changed circumstances.”
The results showed that some of the deceased, mostly children, died from strangulation.
As of now, the Kenyan government team led by Dr. Odour has done post-mortem examinations on 76 bodies.
