Classic FM presenter Maina Kageni has been on the radio for 22 years and is regarded by many as the king of the Kenyan airwaves.
However, Maina didn’t plan to be on the radio, it was the lack of Ksh40,000 that saw him land his first job as a radio presenter.
Maina opened up about how he started his career on the radio by chance while speaking during an interview with Kamene Goro.
“I got on radio by fluke. There is a friend of mine called Trevor Kanja and Dj Pinye. We had brought in some DJs from the UK and I had gone to book airtime on Capital. So I paid for the airtime then they said we need Ksh40,000 for the voiceover,” Maina said.
“They asked me if I can voice the ad if I did not have the money. So I did the voice over and they asked me have you ever been on radio? I said No.. Then they asked me if I want to try it,” he added.
Maina further noted that if he had the Ksh40,000 that Capital FM demanded for a voiceover then he would never end up being a radio presenter.
“Basically if I had sh40,000 on that day I would never be on radio. I would have been a nyamthoga selling spares in River Road, probably a broker of sorts coz I just loved biashara,” he said.
“I have done this for 22 years. So I know it’s important to know what you are doing way ahead of yourself,” he added.
