The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a seven-day weather forecast for the period between March 4 and March 10, 2025, signaling the possible end of prolonged dry conditions.
While hot and dry weather will persist across much of the country, rainfall is expected in several regions toward the end of the forecast period.
According to the KMD, maximum daytime temperatures will remain high, exceeding 30°C in most areas.
However, cooler conditions, with temperatures below 30°C, are anticipated in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central and South Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Lake Victoria Basin.
Regions Expecting Rainfall
The KMD has forecast occasional rainfall in parts of the country, particularly toward the end of the forecast period. Areas likely to experience precipitation include:
- The Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley
- The Lake Victoria Basin
- The Central and South Rift Valley
- The Coastal Region
- The South-Eastern Lowlands
- Isolated parts of the Northeast and Northwest
Weather Outlook by Region
Highlands East of the Rift Valley (Including Nairobi County)
Counties such as Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi will experience mostly sunny intervals during the day.
However, occasional morning rains and afternoon showers are expected toward the end of the forecast period.
Nights will generally be partly cloudy, though a few areas may receive showers.
The maximum average daytime temperature will exceed 30°C, with night temperatures dropping to around 10°C.
Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley, and Highlands West of the Rift Valley
Regions including Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok will see mostly sunny conditions during the day.
However, morning rains and afternoon showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected in some areas later in the week.
Nights will be partly cloudy, with occasional showers. Minimum nighttime temperatures could drop to 13°C, while daytime highs may reach 30°C.
South-Eastern Lowlands
Counties such as Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta, along with inland areas of Tana River County, will experience predominantly sunny conditions.
However, sporadic morning rains and afternoon showers may occur toward the end of the forecast period. Nights will be partly cloudy, with some areas likely to receive light showers.
Coastal Region
Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, along with the coastal parts of Tana River, will experience prolonged sunny intervals during the day.
Afternoon and night showers are expected in some areas as the forecast period progresses.
Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya
Counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, and Samburu will remain largely dry with daytime sunshine and partly cloudy nights.
Strong south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are anticipated in parts of Marsabit County.
While the dry spell is set to persist in many areas, the anticipated showers in several regions mark the beginning of a potential seasonal shift.
The KMD advises residents to remain prepared for changing weather patterns, particularly in areas where high temperatures and sporadic rainfall are expected.
