Adelle Onyango remembers her late father as a very abusive man who caused physical and emotional pain to her mother and her.
The former Kiss FM presenter had a troubled childhood even though she was brought up in a rich family.
Adelle father was a former managing director of Nzoia Sugar while her mother was Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
Her mother Mary Onyango was also a founding member and executive director of the Kenya Breast Health Programme.
She battled breast cancer since 1999 and succumbed to the condition on March 31st 2012 at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.
Adelle recalled her troubled childhood while speaking during an interview with CTA YouTube, she reflected on how her abusive father frustrated her mother.
“Ok! It is unfair to put that on him because I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him…so I give him that. But my dad, I think in her insights…he wasn’t a good husband at all and was not a good father in that regard. Because if you treat your children’s mother in an abusive manner, then that means you are not being a good father at the same time,” Adelle said.
“My dad was very abusive to my mum…I know physically because you could see. Coz I was so young, I am just assuming there must have been some emotional abuse as well. I think he had a problem with alcohol,” she added.
Adelle further revealed that she suffered childhood trauma because of her father’s violent nature.
She acknowledges that the anxiety she currently suffers from now is as a result of childhood trauma caused by her father’s violence.
“We didn’t really have a good relationship because of that. Because of therapy, I have understood that my anxiety issue can be stemmed back to that. Elements of it came from childhood…whereby you are seated and wondering…’I hope he is not going to be violent today.”
