Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has begun construction of a Research and Development (R&D Center at Tana Power Station in Murang’a County.
KenGen is hoping to use the facility for both innovation purposes and an archive.
Upon completion, KenGen will be the only public facility in the country to have such a facility,
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Mrs. Rebecca Miano, said that the project is part of the company’s overall diversification strategy and will also help the power-generating firm identify and implement new revenue streams faster.
“With this facility, KenGen employees now have a place to carry out trials, tests, experiments and pilot new business in the context of our diversification strategy,” said Mrs. Miano as reported by KBC.
She further noted that the center will also be used by the company to conceive ideas that will change its businesses and the energy sector.
Mrs also revealed that the company has come up with measures to ensure that the contractors and employees working on the project was safe and observing the covid-19 prevention measures.
The innovation hub will provide locally sourced technological solutions for power generation as well as augmenting KenGen’s endeavors in its power generation capacity and diversify its project portfolio.
