Kasmuel McOure, a prominent figure among Kenya’s Gen Z activists, has come under heavy criticism following his apparent support for the government during public discussions on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kasmuel’s stance, which deviated from his usual outspoken criticism of the establishment, has left many of his supporters disillusioned.
The controversy unfolded during a public participation session at Bomas of Kenya, where Kasmuel and other activists were given the opportunity to voice their opinions on the impeachment motion against Gachagua.
During the same event, fellow activist Morara Kebaso was violently attacked by goons. Yet when Kasmuel took the stage, he failed to condemn the assault, focusing instead on supporting the argument for Gachagua’s removal from office.
In a statement that shocked many of his followers, Kasmuel sided with members of Parliament, echoing their call for the deputy president’s impeachment.
“Gachagua must go!” Kasmuel declared, without mentioning President William Ruto, who has also been a frequent target of activist demands.
His decision not to address the attack on Kebaso or to challenge the broader political structure drew fierce backlash from supporters who felt betrayed.
The fallout has been swift. Mcoure’s social media platforms have seen a sharp decline in followers, with his Facebook account dropping from over 180,000 followers to 106,000.
His X (formerly Twitter) account has also experienced a decline, falling from 160,000 to 148,000 followers in the aftermath of the incident.
Kenyans, particularly young people who had rallied behind Kasmuel’s activism, have voiced their anger and disappointment.
Many accuse him of abandoning the principles he once stood for and aligning with the political elite.
“He was supposed to represent the voice of the youth, but now he seems to have lost his way,” said one critic on social media.
Others have questioned his commitment to the causes he had previously championed.
The uproar has ignited broader conversations about the integrity of young activists in Kenya and their susceptibility to political pressure.
Kasmuel’s fall from grace has left many wondering if their chosen leaders are as independent and uncompromised as they claim to be.
For now, the young activist who once symbolized resistance to government overreach finds himself facing the difficult task of regaining the trust of a generation that feels betrayed.
