Elizabeth Michael alias Lulu was on November 13th 2017 found guilt of manslaughter in the death of actor Steven Kanumba.
Lulu was sentence to two years in prison by a Dar es Salaam court for the death of Kanumba, her ex-boyfriend whom she was dating until his death.
According to reports, the tragic event occurred on April 7th, 2012 when Lulu was 17 years old while Kanumba was 28 years old.
Kanumba, who was the most popular actor in Tanzania, died after Lulu pushed him against the wall during an argument because of a call she allegedly received from another man.
During death inquest, Kanumba’s younger brother Seth Bosco told the court that Lulu had an altercation with his brother on that fateful day. He explained that the two were quarreling because Lulu picked up a call from another man in the presence of the late actor.
Bosco further revealed that Lulu came out of the room and informed her that Kanumba had fallen. The two called a doctor who declared Kanumba dead after examining him.
Esther Zephania, a detective who arrested Lulu on that fateful day, told the court that walls of the room where the actor died had black blood-like stains.
Lulu was sentenced for Kanumba’s death five years after the actor died. On November 13th 2017, court found her guilt of manslaughter and handed her a 2-year prison sentence.
However, Lulu was only in prison for six months. Her 2-year sentence for culpable homicide was commuted to community service after she stayed in prison for six months only.
On May 12nd 2018, Lulu was set free on a lesser punishment. She was one of 3,319 prisoners who were pardoned by late President John Magufuli as the nation commemorated the 54th anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar in April.
Her two-year sentence was reviewed by the High Court in Dar es Salaam which noted that Lulu had reformed during her time in prison.
Fast forward to 2022, Kanumba’s mother Frida Mtegoa has forgiven Lulu for causing her son’s death.
In an interview with Global TV, Kanumba’s mum said she had forgiven her and forgotten about it.
However, Kanumba’s mother said Lulu would have given her a grandchild, she wished her late son and the actress would have had a child together.
“Wherever she is, let her know that I have nothing against her. I wish they had given me a grandchild at the time they were dating,” Kanumba’s mother said.
