Jua Cali Blames Street Food for Diarrhoea, Vomiting at India Concert

Genge music pioneer Jua Cali has candidly opened up about one of the most uncomfortable experiences of his music career—a sudden bout of diarrhoea and vomiting during a concert trip in India, all thanks to what he now calls a “deceptively sweet” street snack.

Speaking during his Bare Sessions fan engagement at the National Museums of Kenya, the Ngeli ya Genge hitmaker recalled how an otherwise exciting performance overseas took a sharp turn after he indulged in unfamiliar street delicacies.

“Have you ever vomited and had diarrhoea at the same time?” the rapper asked his audience, drawing laughter and sympathetic winces in equal measure.

“It happened to me in India, and I was not ready.”

The veteran artist, whose real name is Paul Julius Nunda, had been invited to perform for Kenyan and African fans based in India. But what started as a dream gig quickly spiralled into a digestive disaster.

According to Jua Cali, the trouble began when a friend suggested they explore the local street food scene.

Tempted by the exotic allure, he downed sugarcane juice infused with unfamiliar flavours and followed it up with a hearty plate of pilau from a nearby kiosk.

“I swear that sugarcane juice was something else,” he chuckled. “It was so good, but clearly my stomach didn’t agree.”

Later that evening, during a farewell party hosted by fans, Jua Cali’s body began to protest.

A sharp stomachache forced him to make a hurried dash to the bathroom—and the vomiting soon followed.

“I had to step out. What I ate earlier just started coming out from all directions,” he told fans, recalling the moment with brutal honesty.

“From that day, I swore: when in India, just stick to KFC!”

Despite the ordeal, Jua Cali said he completed his performance commitments, although the final night was anything but glamorous. Still, he holds no grudges.

“Street food is a gamble—sometimes you win, sometimes your stomach loses,” he joked.

The rapper’s humorous but humbling story struck a chord with fans, many of whom praised his openness and ability to laugh at an uncomfortable moment.
