Lang’ata MP Jalang’o sensationally claimed that a staggering 30 million Kenyans applied for the Green Card Lottery this year.
Jalang’o in a post on social media created the impression that things were so bad in Kenya that the majority of citizens wanted to relocate to US.
“30 million Kenyans have applied for the green card lottery! Yaani only 2o million of us want to live in Kenya! Is It that bad?” Jalang’o wrote.
But is Jalango’s claim true? First of all the US Department of State has not issued any information about the number of applicants. So how did Jalas arrive at the 30 million figure?
The registration period for the DV-2024 Program popularly known as the green card lottery began on October 5, 2022, and concluded on November 8, 2022.
The United States Department of State publishes all information about Green Card, no information has been released yet about the number of applicants.
Even so, approximately 100,000 people worldwide are drawn annually.
From this group, the US authorities then expect about 55,000 qualified applicants.
The Diversity Lottery Program makes available up to 55,000 permanent resident visas annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
