The government has announced a significant boost to security forces with the planned recruitment of 10,000 new police officers in the next financial year.
The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, during the Jukwaa La Usalama nationwide tour held in Mombasa County on Monday, April 7, 2025.
CS Murkomen stated that this recruitment drive aims to enhance security across the country.
He also outlined the ministry’s intention to formulate policies that will promote and reward high-performing security officers. Conversely, he issued a warning to underperforming officers, indicating they risk being relieved of their duties.
During the tour, Murkomen addressed critical national security concerns, with a particular focus on the government’s ongoing efforts to combat drug and substance abuse among the youth in Mombasa County.
Plans for Chiefs and Administrative Officers
Murkomen’s tour also involved discussions with a wide range of stakeholders, including elected leaders, top ministry officials, chiefs, assistant chiefs, security personnel, community leaders, civil society representatives, youth representatives, and members of the business community.
He announced forthcoming plans to improve the promotion prospects, remuneration, and overall welfare of chiefs and other administrative officers.
The Cabinet Secretary also acknowledged the crucial role played by the media in promoting security and safeguarding the nation, promising to engage in open discussions with members of the press.
The Jukwaa la Usalama initiative is a nationwide tour led by the Interior Cabinet Secretary to engage directly with residents, leaders, and security stakeholders.
The platform aims to gather feedback on citizen services and conduct spot checks on initiatives like the Mobile ID Registration rollout.
Key issues discussed during these engagements include security, drug and substance abuse, land disputes, tourism, citizen services, the welfare of National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) and security officers, alternative dispute resolution, and community policing.
The announcement of 10,000 police job vacancies signals the government’s commitment to strengthening law enforcement capabilities as part of its broader efforts to enhance national security and address criminal activities across the country.
