Catherine Kamau aka Kate Actress opened up about her lukewarm relationship with her in-laws.
Kate spoke about her in-laws having issues with her long before her breakup with Phil Karanja.
The two jointly announced the end of their marriage in a statement issued on September 19, 2023.
“We came to a conclusion to end our marriage a long while ago and are separated. We sincerely request everyone to honour our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” the two stated.
Long before their separation, Kate narrated her issues with Phil’s family in an interview on YouTube channel Fashionable StepMum in May 2021.
In the interview, the actress said that Phil’s family felt like their son was ‘saving’ her from some sort of poverty by marrying her.
“You can feel the energy. It wasn’t pleasant. You can feel the sneaky comments. But I wasn’t a charity case. I was sure of myself. I knew what I was bringing to the table. Your son isn’t coming to rescue us. I was doing well with my son even before,” she said.
Kate also revealed that she gave Phil a stern warning that she would leave their marriage if she saw anyone mistreating her son Leon (Kate gave birth to Leon when she was 19).
“I had made it clear to Phil and for him to communicate to his family that if I see any mistreatment towards my son, that is a deal breaker na mimi sinaga kesho.”
Kate also disclosed that her mother-in-law had issues with her, but she treated her son well.
“My mum-in-law she shocked me. Her relationship with my son was amazing from day one. We had our own issues but when it came to my son, that I admired the way she handled it. He felt accepted,” she said.
Kate also highlighted the challenges in marriage, insisting that marriage was not for the faint-hearted.
“It is not easy. Phil is one in a million. Marriage is not for everyone. Marriage nayo ni calling. It might not be for you. Don’t force it. If it happens to you thank you Lord. If it does not please move on…. Life is for the living please date again.”
