Tanzanian rapper and former Mikumi MP Joseph Haule aka Professor Jay has opened up about losing all his wealth after a harrowing 462-day hospital stay.
The 48-year-old disclosed that his family sold most of his properties without his consent while he was critically ill to fund his treatment, a decision he says he does not regret.
“I am starting from scratch. Since I got sick, my siblings sold most of my properties to save my life. And because it was my wealth, I don’t regret it, because the most important thing is that I am alive today, when those chances seemed small. I believe you can always look for wealth,” Professor Jay said.
The legendary rapper and politician revealed that his family made the decision to sell his assets while he was in a vegetative state, unable to give his input.
Despite this, he holds no resentment.
“I didn’t know they were selling my properties. Those decisions were their decisions as a family because I spent most of my days in a vegetative state,” he explained.
Professor Jay’s health battle began on January 24, 2022, when he was rushed to the Lugalo Military Hospital in critical condition.
As his situation worsened, he was transferred to Muhimbili National Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Suffering from kidney failure, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, the rapper endured a grueling fight for his life.
He spent 127 days in the ICU, relying on tubes for breathing, eating, and excretion.
At one point, his condition was so dire that doctors estimated his chances of survival at only 40 percent.
Recalling a particularly dark moment, Professor Jay revealed he had lost all hope.
“I had lost all hope of ever living again. At that point, I was sure I was going to die. For me, it was a question of when, not if. One day, I woke up and wanted to end the suffering, so I pulled the dialysis tubes out of my body to the amazement of the doctors. I was ready to die,” he said in an earlier interview.
Now on the road to recovery, the rapper remains optimistic about the future.
He has announced his intention to run for the Mikumi parliamentary seat in the 2025 Tanzanian general election.
