“I Was Misunderstood” Moya David Explains Why He Decided To Copyright His Dance Moves

TikToker and choreographer Moya David faced a lot of backlash after announcing that he had patented his popular dance moves as well as his name.

He threatened to take legal action against those who use the moves without credits or his name for malicious intentions.

Moya has however come out to clarify his comments saying that he was misunderstood.

“Most Kenyans and some few bloggers misunderstood what I meant. That day I was launching my shop and it was about my brand and everything. I didn’t know it was going to be a story, I said it on a light note,” the dancer told Mungai Eve.

Moya  added that the move to patent his creations is only meant to protect them and prove that he is the owner incase business opportunities arise in future. According to him, patenting does not prevent people from dancing the moves since he also uses songs that have been copyrighted in his videos, and royalties go to respective artists.

“I have been to different countries and people have been advising me about my content and there is one person, through mail, who wanted to buy the dance. There is a guy called idol, who came up with coffin dance, he sold his dance for Kshs115 million but for him to sell that,  he had to copyright it first so that he owns it.

“Me copyrighting the choreography doesn’t mean that I am blocking people from dancing the moves. It is only that I am owning the rights to my creation so that incase NFT decides to buy the dance, how will I prove it is mine? I have to  have the certificate to show I created the choreography. It is only protecting my work, that is where people misunderstood me,” he said.
