Pierra Makena was a Radio and TV personality before she decided to fully focus on Deejaying.
She quit her media job in 2013 to focusĀ and since then she has never been employed.
In an interview with MC Jessy, she admitted that it was however a tough decision as she went through difficult moments.
She first gave her shot at deejaying while hosting a mid-morning show to be unique from other top presenters in 2009.
“There is Cess, Caroline Mutoko, I was like how do I become different. I was like how about radio DJ. I shared it with my friend and he said it wasĀ a good idea,” she recalled.
She deejayed on radio until 2013, when sheĀ got an opportunity to play music for a bigger crowd at Carnivore.
“I played only two songs. I mixed one song to the other and the crowd[went crazy]. They have never seen a woman do that. They cheered,” she said adding that it gave her motivation to pursue the dream.
However playing music in clubs and her dress code brought about allegations that she had become a stripper and prostitute.
“I’m a female, no other female deejays are known, in a club, I go while dressed up. I went through hell. My parents asked me to quit. As if that is not enough, now there is the male DJs,” she said.
According to her, the male DJs felt threatened and started spreading hate against her to push her out of the way as she was landing gigs.
“Others would come and tell me verbally as a chick that is not my thing, that there are no other female DJs coz it is a not a space for women,” she recalled.
The church too was also not left behind.
“I was judged by the church but nobody came out to tell me that I had backslid. I used to sing in church. I am saved. My relationship with God is very strong,” she said that being a DJ never changed her character and how she was raised up by her parents.
“I am still the same person, god-fearing, church-going person just that deejaying was added.”
Despite the challenges, Pierra went ahead on to set an example to aspiring female DJs, not compromising herself to get jobs.
“I needed to set example to other women who want to become DJs by not giving up, 2and secondly never to become a prostitute. I promised myself for the future of female DJs and kids I will never sleep with anybody to get a job. IĀ have never compromised myself,” the mother of one said.
