‘He Died From Cardiac Arrest’ – Family Clarifies Details of Chebukati’s Death Amid Rumours

The family of Wafula Chebukati, the former Chair of the Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has come out to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death, dismissing rumours that circulated on social media.

Chebukati passed away on February 20 after suffering a cardiac arrest – the family said.

According to the family’s spokesperson, Eric Nyongesa, Chebukati had been battling brain cancer since April 2023.

He underwent successful surgery to remove a tumor in Germany but was later diagnosed with a recurrence of the cancer in April 2024.

Further complications necessitated additional medical interventions, including a second surgery.

Despite the family’s efforts to manage his health, Chebukati’s condition continued to deteriorate, leading to a hospitalization in December 2024.

He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for intensive monitoring and treatment.

It was during this period that he suffered a cardiac arrest, which ultimately led to his passing.

Nyongesa firmly rejected claims that circulated on social media suggesting Chebukati had been declared clinically dead before his actual passing.

The family is set to conduct a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and put an end to speculation.

Chebukati’s leadership in the IEBC was marked by challenges and controversies, yet he remained committed to the ideals of democracy and transparency.

His passing is a significant loss for Kenya’s political landscape, and his legacy will be remembered as a public servant who navigated the complexities of electoral politics with resilience and dedication.

The family has planned a funeral for March 8 at Chebukati’s farm in Kitale, where they will bid farewell to a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s electoral processes.
