The lifeless body of Sean Cardovillis was discovered by a cleaner on Saturday September 9, 2023.
The veteran Sports journalist was found dead outside his house in Westlands, Nairobi where he lived alone.
A cleaner who had gone to clean the area leading to Cardovillis’ house on the fourth floor of an apartment discovered the journalist’s body.
It is not clear if he was leaving for work or had died Friday night, police said.
Witnesses said the cleaner raised the alarm and an ambulance arrived there. Police too visited the scene.
The medics declared Cardovillis dead at the scene and carried away his body to the mortuary.
Police said they are yet to know the cause of his death. An autopsy is planned on the body to establish the cause of the death as part of the probe.
Cardovillis had a major health scare in February 2022 when he was unexpectedly hospitalized due to a severe pneumonia attack.
His family shared a notice online appealing for financial help. At the time, he had been admitted to HDU after developing lung complications.
“Sean has been hospitalized for a while now. The chest pains he had been experiencing for a while turned into pneumonia and one of his lungs collapsed, he also had an infection around his heart,” the notice from the family read in part
In a heartwarming display of support, fellow Kenyans rallied behind him, raising over Ksh1 million through the Mchanga fund to alleviate his medical expenses.
The late journalist was a sports enthusiast and worked with several media houses in Kenya and abroad.
Sean Cardovillis’ journey in the world of media began in 1997, when he assumed the position of sports editor at Capital FM.
He worked for nine years at Capital FM before he joined Paradise FM in Seychelles in 2006.
In 2014, he joined Nation Media Group, where he assumed the crucial role of Head of Radio. While in NTV, he was also a sports journalist and anchor.
Cardovillis left NMG in 2020 amid a wave of journalist layoffs. He continued his career as a freelance journalist.
The late journalist rejoined Capital FM in June this year. At the time of his death he was still working for the station.
