Five drivers who are also trained police officers attached to the Deputy President William Ruto have been withdrawn.
This comes a day after GSU officers manning Ruto’s residences in Karen, Sugoi and Eldoret were withdrawn.
According to Ruto’s spokesperson Emmanuel Talam, the drivers who were withdrawn are attached to the transport team.
“Those who have been withdrawn are five trained police officers who are in the driving team, however, three of the recalled drivers have already been told to get back to work by Monday,” Talam said.
On Thursday the government withdrew the GSU officers guarding Ruto’s houses and replaced them with Administration Police.
The move caused an uproar forcing Inspector General of police Hillary Mutyambai to address the issue.
Mutyambai said that the GSU were not withdrawn but only redeployed adding that the Presidential Escort Unit will continue to provide close protection security to the DP.
“The National Police Service through its various units is mandated to provide security to government buildings and critical infrastructure including security to VVIPs and their residences,” Mutyambai said.
The move prompted youths to camp at Ruto’s Eldoret home to fill in the gap left by the GSU officers.
Ruto’s troubles come after President Uhuru Kenyatta asked him resign from his position on Monday during an interview with the country’s senior editors.
“I have an agenda that I was elected on. The honorable thing to do if you are not happy with it is to step aside and allow those who want to move on to do so then take the agenda to the people,” the president said.
Ruto on his side insisted that he was not going to resign no matter what.
“I’m a man on a mission. I have no space to retreat nor the luxury to surrender,” Ruto said.
