“How I got HIV is a story that is still difficult to talk about,” Brian Chira gave a disclaimer before opening up.
According to him, he contracted the disease after going to Mombasa for a high end party a few years back.
“Chira goes to Mombasa. Chira gets invited by…these high end parties where people go to and there are people who are ready to pay for a good time.. Chira gets invited, I take a bus from Nakuru to Mombasa. I arrive at 7 but the party happens at night so I had to find a place to hangout,” the 22-year old recalled in an interview with Oga Obinna.
While waiting for the main party, Brian Chira was invited by a friend to his bedsitter. The friend also invited his other friends and they hanged out together.
The team got drunk and matters escalated. According to him he was sodomized. He however didn’t know what happened because he was very drunk.
“A friend of mine used to school in TUM, he committed suicide. He invites me over and I go. He invites like 2-4 people and they come with their ladies so we were like 6 people in a room, it was a bedsitter. We all just had drinks and things escalate to…but I feel like I was taken advantage of(there were 2 women and four men). They were so sorry,” he said.
After discovering what had happened to him, he immediately left for Nairobi.
The man who took advantage of him however passed after overdosing.
“I reported that to the school, Kabarak University, I was given the PREP. The physician didn’t tell me how to take the medicine, I used to skip a day or two. I thought I was okay, they were 30 tablets. When I finished them I thought I was fine,” he said.
Chira however came to discover that he was positive three months later. It was during the Covid season when a friend invited him out for lunch.
“I didn’t know I was being taken to VCT. Because they get paid when they take people for testing. It was in Kiambu hospital level 5. Then the nurse calls me for a short while,” he narrated.
Brian Chira added that he knew he was safe having taken the Prep medication.
“It just turns out it was positive. I was skeptical at the moment. We do three tests all of them come out positive,” Chira said
