29-year-old Bahati is now a multimillionaire, but he has only been rich for 9 years, for 20 years he lived life in abject poverty in Mathare slums.
Bahati opened up about his life in Mathere while speaking during an interview with his wife Diana Marua on her YouTube channel.
The singer broke down in tears while narrating how his mother died because she couldn’t access hospital in time.
“My mom passed on akiwa kwa nyumba ni story sitakangi ata kusema sana juu ata hadi leo Mathare haina level five hospital. The morning my mom passed tuliamka na mtu 3am so that mgonjwa wako aki fikiwa ata saa tano saa zingine,” Bahati painfully narrated.
Bahati said life was really hard for him after his mother died, he lived with his dad for a while but because of several challenges he ended up in a children’s home.
“I lost her when I was in nursery going to class one and for a moment I think losing a mom changes everything and for a moment I thought my life in Nairobi was done because uki ishi kwa slums and you lose a very key parent like your mom,” said Bahati.
He added that;
“We were so poor and my dad was not in a position to afford kukua na househelp ama mtu wa ku kaanga na mimi.”
