Lillian Ng’ang’a and her ex husband former Machakos governor and the current Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua publicly announced their separation on August 15, 2021.

Nearly four years after her highly publicized breakup, Lilian is opening up about the personal growth and lessons she learned from the experience.

In an exclusive interview with Dr. Ofweneke TV, Lillian, who once held the title of First Lady of Machakos County, reflected on the journey that led to her decision to walk away.

She shared the key takeaways from her breakup—insights that shaped the woman she is today.

1. The Importance of Personal Freedom

Lillian met Alfred Mutua when she was just 25 years old.

Stepping into the role of First Lady at such a young age forced her to mature quickly.

However, as she entered her early 30s, she began yearning for more independence.

“I felt there was more out there, and I wanted to break free—not to end the relationship, but to be my own person,” she explained.

However, this desire for self-discovery did not sit well with her then-partner, leading to conflicts that eventually culminated in their split.

2. Growth Is Inevitable, and It Must Be Embraced

Lillian acknowledged that entering her 30s was a pivotal period in her life.

She realized that personal evolution is natural and that resisting growth can be detrimental.

“When you get into your 30s as a woman, it’s just natural for you to want more for yourself,” she said, adding that women should not feel guilty for desiring change and self-improvement.

3. Understanding Relationship Dynamics

The former county First Lady revealed that conflicts in their relationship arose from differences in expectations and control.

As she sought more autonomy, she felt constrained by a partnership that did not align with her evolving needs.

“I think our fights started from a partner saying, ‘No, you can’t. It’s us. We can’t break free.’”

This, she admitted, made her realize the importance of aligning values and expectations in a relationship.

4. Healing and Letting Go Are Possible

Despite the emotional turmoil of the breakup, Lillian emphasized that time helped both her and Mutua find peace.

She revealed that they have since mended their relationship and now share a strong friendship.

“Alfred and I are currently good friends. Everything came down, temperatures cooled, and now we are just good friends. It was meant to be that way. You can’t fight it,” she stated.

5. Happiness Comes from Within

Today, Lillian is happily married to rapper Julian and is a mother to their son, Utheri.

Looking back, she appreciates that true happiness comes from within, not from external circumstances.

Her journey serves as a reminder that love, loss, and self-discovery are all parts of life’s evolution.

For Lillian Ng’ang’a, the end of her relationship with Alfred Mutua was not a failure—it was the beginning of a new chapter filled with freedom, growth, and self-awareness.

Lillian’s reflections provide a powerful message for women navigating relationships, personal growth, and self-empowerment.

Her story is a testament to embracing change, standing firm in one’s identity, and finding happiness on one’s own terms.
